Stories From the Brooklyn Scout Camps
Religion
Art
One of the best things about the fellowship of
scouting and TMR especially was that religion was never a factor.
One example I particularly remember was that during
a TMR-wide staff training experience I attended for several days one of
the leaders, who I believe was Jewish, taught us a new song, "Passing
Through". It was very "singable", and the words included "I saw
Jesus on the cross on that hill called Calvary, and he said why do
people do the things they do?" "He said think of love not hate,
things to do, it's getting late, there's so little time and we're just
passing through."
To the best of my recollection, nobody had second
thoughts about whether or not it was "appropriate" for non-Christians
to sing that song, we just enjoyed it for a) being a new song b) it's
important message that was universally applicable.
