Stories From the Brooklyn Scout Camps
Joe Sonneborn
Mike Drillinger
The
"Uncle Joe" of "pack your trunk, evacuate your bunk" fame was JOE
SONNEBORN. Joe was a professional Scouter and the long-time
Assistant Director of Finance for years for GNYC. He served as
the Assistant to the Director of TMR during the summer. He was
known as the "eyes and ears" for the reservation director and did it
for Joe Klein, Dick Ruffino, Elmer Greey and Steve Wells. I
remember Joe and his late '50's green Ford with a whip antenna for it's
CB radio. Joe was also famous for always grubbing cigarettes from
any staff member who smoked. He usually began a conversation with
a greeting, followed by, "got a cigarette?" He lived, I believe,
into his 90's and passed away only several years ago.
